The practical reason for a pre-cruise night is the flight risk: a delay the day before is a missed sailing. But it also buys you a real evening in Venice — go in for the late afternoon, when the day-trippers have gone, have dinner back on the mainland at local prices, and be twenty minutes from the ship in the morning.
