Venice is wonderful year-round, but when you go changes the trip completely — from crowd levels and prices to the odd chance of flooded squares. Here's how the seasons really feel, so you can pick the right dates.
Short answer: the shoulder seasons — April to May and September to October. You get pleasant, mild weather and noticeably thinner crowds than the summer peak, without the flood risk of deep winter. For most travellers, these are the sweet-spot months.

The islands get genuinely packed at peak times. To dodge the worst of it:
Venice Carnival — the famous masks and costumes — falls in the two weeks or so before Lent (February; exact dates shift each year). It's magical, but expect big crowds and much higher prices, especially on the final weekend and the two "Grasso" days. Come for the spectacle if that's your thing; avoid these dates if you want a calm Venice. (Check the current year's official Carnival dates before booking.)
You may have heard of acqua alta — the seasonal high tides that can briefly flood low areas like St Mark's Square. It's most common from October to January, peaking around November, and is rare in summer. It's usually short-lived and predictable (the city forecasts it and puts up raised walkways), but if you visit in late autumn, pack waterproof shoes just in case.
Staying on the mainland means you're never caught by island prices or the worst crowds — you dip into Venice when it's at its best (early or late), then retreat to a calm, affordable base — our apartments are a 10-minute train ride from the island. In peak season that flexibility is worth a lot.
