Getting from Mestre to Venice: trains, trams & buses
Staying in Mestre and wondering how you'll actually get across to Venice? Good news: it's quick, cheap and frequent. Here's every option, with the practical details that save you time (and fines).
How long does it take to get from Mestre to Venice?
About 10 minutes by train from Venezia Mestre station to Venezia Santa Lucia, the station right on the island. The tram (~20 min) and bus (~16 min) take a little longer but drop you at Piazzale Roma, right next to Santa Lucia. For most people the train is the fastest option — but from many Mestre apartments — ours included — the bus is the easiest, because there's often a stop just around the corner.
By bus — usually the easiest from the door
ACTV city buses (line 2 and others) cross the Ponte della Libertà to Venezia Piazzale Roma.
Journey time: about 16 minutes.
Good for: the simplest door-to-door trip when a bus stop is close to where you're staying.
Ticket: a single ACTV urban ticket, €1.50, valid 75 minutes in one direction with transfers allowed.
Where to buy: the AVM Venezia Official App, ticket machines, ACTV points, or tabaccherie (tobacconists). You can also tap a contactless card on board on many lines.
By train — the fastest option
Route: Venezia Mestre → Venezia Santa Lucia
Journey time: about 10 minutes (9–11).
Frequency: very frequent — roughly 10+ regional trains an hour through the day, so you rarely wait long.
Ticket price: about €1.50 one way (2nd-class Regionale).
Where to buy: station machines, the ticket office, or the Trenitalia app. A regional (Regionale) train is all you need for this short hop — no pricier fast train required.
⚠️ Validate before you board. Stamp paper regional tickets in the small green machines on the platform before boarding — an un-validated ticket can be fined even if you paid. (App/mobile tickets are already valid — no stamping.)
By tram (Line T1)
The modern tram Line T1 runs from Mestre across the bridge to Venezia Piazzale Roma.
Journey time: about 20 minutes from Mestre centre.
Runs: roughly 06:00 to 23:30, frequently.
Ticket: the same €1.50 ACTV urban ticket (75 minutes) as the bus.
Good for: a smooth, scenic ride, or when a tram stop is the closest option.

Practical tips
The €1.50 land ticket does NOT cover the water buses. Bus, tram and train get you to the edge of Venice (Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia). From there you walk into the city (very doable), or take a vaporetto (water bus) — but a single vaporetto ticket is around €9.50, so most people walk. A combined bus/tram + vaporetto "Rete Unica" ticket is also €9.50 for 75 minutes if you want both.
Buy on the app (AVM Venezia for bus/tram, Trenitalia for trains) to skip queues and the validation worry.
Validate paper tickets before boarding — the single most common tourist mistake here.
Coming back late? The tram runs until roughly 23:30 and trains run late too — but check the last departure before a night out so it doesn't turn into a taxi.
With suitcases? The train is easiest — a short ride straight to the island's main station.
